Atunaisa Saigani thanked God for his parents who encouraged him to dedicate more time on his studies and revision work.

He scored 310 out of 400.

The Navesau Adventist High School boarding student said he studied late into the night and sometimes went to bed hungry.

He also made the effort to study at 4am each day which began with a prayer.

The 19-year-old is the eldest of his seven siblings.

Saigani’s father is the sole breadwinner in his family and works as a sawmill operator.

“We had to pay our own school expenses at a time when my father was on reduced hours due to COVID-19 and could not provide for all of us,” he said.

“Being the eldest, I did holiday jobs to pay my fees and support my family,” he said.

“I worked with carpenters after school and on weekends.

“Only through God I got these marks and I believe with his grace and my good marks I can take my family out of poverty.”

Saigani has set his sights on pursuing a career as an aircraft engineer after completing high school.

“Staying away from my family was hard, I missed my siblings, but all my efforts are worth it and I dedicate the success to them,” he said.
