It might be a happy moment for these children, but danger lurks and we hope authorities look into this plight urgently.
The urgent plea from the children of Naboro Sawanikula Primary School in Naitasiri to “Build us a bridge” is a cry for help that cannot be ignored.
It is not just a want, but a critical need for their survival and safety.
These children should not have to risk their lives swimming across strong currents in the Wainimala River just to get to and from school.
It is heartening to see bridges being built in other parts of the country, such as the Vuniyasi Bridge in Nadi and the bridge at Veinuqa District School in Namosi.
These infrastructure developments have greatly improved the lives of thousands of people, including students.
It is essential that similar attention and resources be directed towards providing a safe passage for the children of Naboro Sawanikula Primary School.
The responsibility falls on the Minister for Public Works and other government authorities to heed the call of these children and take action before a tragedy occurs.
It is unacceptable that these children have been facing such dangerous conditions for years without any solution in sight. Leaders should prioritise the needs of our nation’s most vulnerable, rather than focusing on their own wants and luxuries.
The Opposition also has a role to play in holding leaders accountable and advocating for the necessary resources to address these critical issues.
There should be no room for blame games or excuses when the lives of our children are at stake.
The time to act is now.
Let us not wait for a life to be lost before taking action.
The children of Naboro Sawanikula Primary School deserve to have a safe and secure way to get to school.
It is time to listen to their plea and “Build Us a bridge” that will ensure their safety and well-being.
