When Aman Lal answers late-night emergency calls to fix resort IT systems, most guests never know the 23-year-old behind the screen has spent years sacrificing comfort, sleep and time with family to build a better future.
Last Saturday night, those sacrifices were recognised when the young IT officer from Tavua was named Rising Star of the Year at the Kimaya Fiji annual staff awards 2026 at Landers Bay Resort and Spa in Vuda, Lautoka.
Kimaya Fiji manages Tour Managers Fiji, Yatule Resort and Spa, Hideaway Resort and Spa, Landers Bay Resort and Spa, and Paradise Bride.

The award honours newcomers who show exceptional dedication, growth and performance in a short time.
For Mr Lal, the moment felt unreal.
“At the moment I feel very proud of myself and also nervous because I did not expect this award to come to me from the company,” he said.
Behind the achievement is a journey marked by hardship and determination.
Originally from Tavua, Mr Lal moved to Lautoka to study and work, renting alone in Saweni while his family remained back home.
“I am renting alone in Saweni, so it has been a difficult journey, like leaving my family back at home,” he said.
The distance from family was not easy, but Mr Lal said his parents became his greatest motivation to keep pushing through the challenges.
“My dad and mom worked for me, and this is my attempt to give back to them,” he said.
Mr Lal began his journey with Kimaya Fiji as a cadet before earning full-time employment with Tour Managers Fiji as an IT officer.
His work often involves responding to resort IT breakdowns and urgent technical issues at all hours, but he said perseverance mattered more than the long nights.
Despite the pressure, he believes young people should never give up on their goals.
“My message to all the youngsters is don’t lose hope. You have to keep pushing until you achieve it,” he said.
For the young man who once left Tavua carrying little more than ambition, the award was more than recognition; it was proof that sacrifice can pay off.
