The Suva Magistrate Court has granted time for State prosecution to file its response to the bail application submitted by the lawyer representing a police officer charged in connection with last year’s 4.7-kilogram methamphetamine bust.

Isireli Daulevu, a senior officer at the Counter Narcotics Bureau, appeared before Resident Magistrate Prabodh Somaratne today. He is charged with one count of abuse of office.

It is alleged that on July 31, 2024, while executing a search warrant at Vodafone Fiji, Daulevu unlawfully disclosed the results to Viliame Nailagi.

The matter was scheduled for a bail hearing. However, State prosecutor Unal Lal informed the court that he had only reviewed the file this morning and would be objecting to bail.

Defence lawyer Joji Cakau stated that the bail application was filed last Friday, in accordance with the court’s instructions, and hoped the prosecution would respond within seven days.

Mr Lal requested more time, citing other pending matters. Daulevu will remain in remand until October 15, when the bail hearing is expected to proceed.
