Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu has raised serious concerns about faith-based groups and cult-like movements creating homeschool environments that may not meet national education standards.

Speaking in parliament on the debate of the Education Bill 2025, Mr Seruiratu questioned how the new law would regulate homeschooling, particularly among groups with strong religious beliefs that resist formal schooling.

“There are some certain beliefs that do not want to send their children to any school, but they have this homeschooling environment that they have created for themselves,” Mr Seruiratu said.

He acknowledged that registered and recognised schools must meet curriculum and assessment standards, but questioned whether homeschools would be held to the same level of scrutiny.

“We’ve had experiences where children are not allowed to go to school, and they create this home learning environment,” he said.

Mr Seruiratu urged the parliamentary committee to take the issue seriously during national consultations.

In response, Minister for Information Lynda Tabuya highlighted that the Education Bill introduces a significant safeguard: compulsory education.

“There is a huge change that has been proposed in this Bill, and that is education is compulsory,” Ms Tabuya said.

She explained that while parents retain the right to choose their child’s school and apply for homeschool education, the decision must always prioritise the welfare of the child.

“With a right to free education comes the responsibility that your children must attend school, that it is compulsory,” Ms Tabuya said.

The Bill permits homeschooling but requires full registration and compliance with the national curriculum.

Mr Seruiratu said the committee must examine what safeguards are needed to ensure all Fijian children receive quality education, regardless of their learning environment.
