A former financial controller of a shipping company accused of taking more than $200,000 has been granted bail.

Selvan Shalendra Kumar, 42, faces 62 counts of obtaining financial advantage by deception.

He is alleged to have taken $210,043.32 from his employer between August 2018 and May 2024 by depositing company money into his own bank account.

Magistrate Yogesh Prasad granted him $2,000 cash bail this morning. He must provide two sureties, live at his current address, not interfere with witnesses, and surrender his passport. He is also banned from applying for new travel documents, and a stop-departure order is in place.

State prosecution was represented by ODPP Counsel Monisha Naidu, while Kumar was represented by lawyer Jitend Reddy.

The case has been adjourned to 27 January 2026.
