The Methodist Church of Fiji has raised alarm over a surge in social issues across the country, linking the trend to a weakening of family unity and values.

Speaking ahead of the church’s annual conference, church's secretary of Social Services, Reverend Sitiveni Kua highlighted the worrying rise in cases related to HIV and other matters affecting children’s welfare.

“We are witnessing a steady increase in social problems, and at the heart of many is the breakdown of family structures,” he said.

“These challenges are deeply interconnected and hit the most vulnerable members of our society, especially children.”

As a key pillar in Fiji’s social and spiritual fabric, the church plans to tackle these concerns head-on during its 2025 conference.

Leaders are expected to debate strategies for addressing the growing number of social challenges and explore ways to support families in restoring unity and moral foundations.

“This year, our focus is on finding practical, compassionate approaches to confront these issues directly,” Rev Kua added.

“We are committed to being part of the solution, working with communities to strengthen family bonds and nurture the next generation.”

The conference, which brings together clergy and lay representatives from across Fiji, is scheduled for later this month.
