Fiji mourns loss of acclaimed surgeon

Internationally acclaimed cardiothoracic surgeon Dr Parma Nand will be remembered in Fiji’s history as one of its finest medical professionals.
Dr Nand passed away in Auckland, New Zealand, last Sunday.
Tributes have been pouring in from friends and family to mark his passing.

Former Fiji Airports Manager for Airport Landside Operations and Customer Services, Joe Gray, said he was still in shock upon learning of the passing of his favourite doctor and surgeon.
“A true statesman who whole-heartedly gave back to serving the community in Fiji,” he shared.
Mr Gray shared that he last spoke with the late doctor last month and was excited about the meet up at California for a break.
“Words cannot express how you made me feel at ease and cope with my anxiety and fear of undergoing surgery,” he added.
“I declare my most sincere gratitude and appreciation for the work you carried out so profoundly and with professional humility. You will always be remembered and never forgotten.”
Dr Nand is originally from Labasa, and went on to achieve name and fame in the field of specialist surgery that is unparalleled in Fiji’s medical history.
Minister for Finance, Biman Prasad, said, “Fiji had lost a giant amongst surgeons.”
“Dr Nand achieved name, fame, and acclaim. But he never for once forgot that Fiji was his land of birth. Until recently, he led a team to come to Fiji and volunteer their service to perform cardiac surgeries each year since 2006.
“Dr Nand was not only an embodiment of wisdom in his profession but was deeply humble, kind, caring, and a true son of Fiji. Fiji is poorer for his passing,” Mr Prasad added.
After completing his Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery at the University of South Pacific/Sydney University, he completed fellowship training at the Freeman Hospital in England, Toronto General Hospital in Canada, and Westmead Hospital in Sydney.
Dr Nand was a cardiothoracic surgeon based in Auckland, with clinical roles at Auckland City Hospital and private consults at MercyAscot Hospital.
He specialised in adult cardiac and thoracic surgery, vascular surgery, heart and lung transplants, and ventricular assist device implantation.
