Philippines proposes ministerial-level ASEAN-PIF dialogue

The Philippines is pushing for stronger co-operation between the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF), including a proposed high-level dialogue between the two regional organisations.

Philippines’ first resident Ambassador to Fiji Noel Novicio made the remarks during the ASEAN 59 celebration at Denarau last Saturday night.

He said the Philippines, which is chairing ASEAN this year, had been working to strengthen co-operation with regional organisations, including the PIF.

“One of our initiatives this year as an organisation is to strengthen co-operation with other regional organisations, including the Pacific Islands Forum,” he said.

“One of our initiatives this year is to start a high-level dialogue between ASEAN and PIF-member countries, hopefully at the ministerial level. We believe that two regions, Southeast Asia and here in the Pacific, we have common challenges and also similar opportunities.

“It’s a win-win for both organisations, ASEAN and PIF, if we can band together, work together for common goals, including similar issues like climate change, maritime security, women, peace and security, even peacekeeping. These are all issues that we share.”

Mr Novicio said the Philippines’ ASEAN chairmanship was particularly significant as the organisation marked its 59th anniversary.

“The Philippines is the chair of ASEAN for this year. Today is the commemoration of the establishment of ASEAN 59 years ago,” he said.

Indonesian Ambassador to Fiji and the Pacific Dupito Simamora said the month was significant for Indonesia, which celebrated its Independence Day on August 17.

“This is an opportunity to meet with my Indonesian diaspora working here in Fiji, including in Marriott and Sheraton,” he said.

Mr Simamora said ASEAN and PIF had similarities as regional organisations representing developing countries.

He said Indonesia was also keen to contribute to strengthening regional ties.
