In a fiery start to the 2025 Sukuna Bowl showdown, the RFMF (Republic of Fiji Military Forces) cricket side delivered a stunning comeback victory, stealing the spotlight with a thrilling three wicket win over the Police team. For head coach Taniela Naulivou, a former Fiji cricket rep, the win was special.

“Well, after losing last year as we tried to beat the Police, this year was lucky for us,” Naulivou said with pride.

“This is the first Sukuna Bowl event of the year, and we’re grateful to start with a win.”

He added cricket always opens the tournament. “We’ve taken the first trophy now we hope more will be heading up to the Army base. Our aim this year is clear: to win the Sukuna Bowl title.”

Police batted first and set a competitive total of 232 all out in 46 overs, appearing firmly in control early on. But Army responded with skill, composure, and teamwork qualities that player of the match Seru Tupou Makutu believes made all the difference.

“We set our platform well this week and trained hard to win,” Makutu said.

“It was a good boost for us because the win was unexpected the Police team was leading.

“We learned from our mistakes last year. “We regrouped, improved our batting and fielding, and worked together as a team. That’s what made the victory today.”

Makutu led from the front with a brilliant 78 runs, anchoring the chase and inspiring the rest of the batting order to push through pressure moments. Army eventually reached the target in the 46th over with 7 wickets down, sparking celebrations among players, families, and supporters.

“This win is dedicated to the RFMF and all families and supporters of the Army teams.”
