Not every match has a hooker scoring tries, but Viliame Daurua proved otherwise.

The Suva Grammar School Under-18 hooker scored three tries to help his side lift the Vodafone Deans trophy again after 21 years following their 36-21 victory over Lelean Memorial School.

The Kadavu native said the achievement came after years of hard work.

It has not been a smooth journey for the 18-year-old. He injured his collarbone three years ago while playing in the Under-15 grade, which ruled him out of the semifinals in 2023.

On Saturday, he was the hero for the seasiders. He powered over for a hat-trick and was named Player of the Match.

Grammar's dominant forward pack laid the foundation for the victory.

"The hat-trick I scored was something we have been learning and mastering during our training sessions and what forwards always do," Daurua said.

"We trained to be aggressive as forwards, and I thank God for His strength and for protecting me from injuries."

He acknowledged head coach Epeli Osborne, who has guided the team since the Under-14 grade. Daurua was also part of the Under-18 team last year that lost to Ratu Kadavulevu School (RKS), who went on to win the title.

"This win is for our coach, who has been with us all these years. We lost in the Under-15 semi-finals, won the Under-16 title, lost in the semi-finals last year and finally won it this year," the Year 12 student said.

"The hat-trick I scored was something we have been learning and mastering during our training sessions and what forwards always do.

"I dedicate my award to my dad and mum for always supporting me.

"It was a tough season that we have come through.

"I want to thank God for giving me the strength - for all the tries and every throw I made. All glory to Him."

Captain Waisale Bolakoro said it was a tough match and praised his teammates for a well-fought victory.

"I thank the boys for staying composed, executing our game plan and not being carried away by the pressure from the crowd," Bolakoro said.

The Navunievu, Bua, native said their goal was to become Deans winners like their coach.

"Coach Osborne was also part of the Suva Grammar side that won in 2001.

"This win is dedicated to all the old scholars, fans and families. We thank you all for your tireless support," he added.
