When the drums echoed across the parade ground during the Republic of Fiji Military Forces’ (RFMF) Basic Recruits Skills Training passing-out parade today, one young man stood proudly at the front.

Twenty-six-year-old Akuila Vute, originally from Nakasaleka, Kadavu, with maternal ties to Somosomo, Taveuni.

What unfolded was more than a military ceremony. It was the story of a young man stepping into his purpose, carrying the hopes of his family, and inspiring many who dream of wearing the uniform.

He was awarded Best Platoon in Drill for leading a platoon that demonstrated outstanding discipline and precision, and Best All-Around in the Field for being the top performer in overall training, field work, and leadership.

For Mr Vute, the journey was far from easy. As a platoon commander, he carried heavy responsibility from the very beginning.

“I was tasked to guide young recruits, many stepping into military life for the first time. It was not easy to drill them,” he said.

Mr Vute is the first in his family to join the RFMF. Raised in the village, he completed his early education at Lomaivuna Secondary School before studying Management, Public Administration, and Accounting at University of the South Pacific.

With six units remaining, he still plans to return and complete his programme once things settle.

His message to young people hoping to follow the same path is simple but powerful:

“If you want something in life, go for it. Set a goal and walk toward it with consistency and discipline. With those two, you can achieve anything,” he said.
