The Fiji National University’s (FNU) Open Day today drew strong interest from students eager to pursue careers in teaching, particularly in Early Childhood Education.
FNU’s Head of Early Childhood Education, Kiti Rarokoliwa, said the turnout of high school students was encouraging, with many expressing interest in joining the programme next year.
“We’ve seen positive outcomes today. Many students who will finish school this year are looking forward to enrolling in the programme,” said a part-time lecturer at the event.

She explained that Fiji continues to face a shortage of trained teachers, especially in the early childhood sector. Schools are waiting for qualified graduates to fill the gaps. However, while demand is growing, experienced teachers are calling for better pay to ensure Fiji retains its educators.
“Teachers are leaving the country to work abroad because of the higher salaries on offer. Those of us who have been in the field for years know the challenges we face. That’s why we’ve asked the Government to consider increasing salaries to keep teachers here,” she said.
Mrs Rarokoliwa noted that while the Open Day highlighted opportunities for new students, it also shed light on the struggles faced by current educators.
When asked if strike action should be taken during external examinations, she said the issue mainly concerned primary and secondary school teachers, but admitted she personally supported the idea.
“Yes, I vouch for the strike. Teachers have been struggling for a long time,” she said.
Despite the challenges, her message to students was clear: remain focused and work hard.
“My advice to students is to keep their heads down and be committed. If they are determined, they will succeed and become the teachers Fiji needs for the future.”
The FNU Open Day showcased both the growing enthusiasm among aspiring teachers and the urgent need to address the concerns of those already serving in classrooms.
