At just 20 years old, Josefa Rarabici Atonio Lalabalavu has already achieved what he once saw only in his dreams.
The young man, who hails from Somosomo, Taveuni, with maternal ties to Tunuloa in Cakaudrove, was awarded the Best All-Around Recruit Award during the Republic of Fiji Military Forces’ (RFMF) Basic Recruits Skills Training passing-out parade today.
The award is given to the recruit who excels academically, performs strongly in fitness, and maintains outstanding discipline throughout training.

As he watched the soldiers march onto the ground during the parade, a familiar feeling washed over him.
“I used to watch soldiers march when I was small. I wanted to be like them,” he said. “Since I was one, this was my dream.”
Josefa’s journey was not just powered by ambition. It was shaped by family. He comes from a bloodline of servicemen, and the desire to continue their legacy burns deeply within him.
“I wanted to be like them. I want to serve and protect the people of Fiji,” he said proudly.
“Wearing this uniform is not just for me, it’s for my family name.”
Mr Lalabalavu said his parents' sacrifices pushed him through the toughest days of training.
“Seeing them struggle every day hurts me the most,” he said. “While they’re still here, I want to make them proud. Everything I’m doing is for them.”
Despite the achievement, Mr Lalabalavu believes this is only the beginning of his military journey.
“This is not the end. I will continue until the end,” he said.
For Mr Lalabalavu, the dream that began in childhood has finally stepped onto the parade ground, and it is only marching forward from here.
