Taxi passengers will pay more from July 1 after the Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) approved a temporary increase in the distance-based fare to help operators cope with rising global fuel prices while keeping essential transport services running.
The adjustment increases the drop charge for general taxis from 10 cents to 14 cents per 100 metres travelled.
Flag fall and waiting time charges remain unchanged. The temporary measure takes effect on Wednesday, July 1.

FCCC said the decision followed an independent assessment of industry costs, which found that higher international fuel prices, driven by geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, had significantly increased operating expenses for taxi operators.
The Commission said the adjustment was intended to ensure taxi services remained viable while balancing the interests of operators and consumers.
FCCC Chief Executive Officer Senikavika Jiuta said the Commission recognised the vital role taxis played in Fiji's transport network and economy.
"Like the bus industry, taxis are an essential public transport service relied upon by thousands of Fijians every day. They provide an important source of income for many families and play a critical role in connecting people to work, education, healthcare, and other essential services," said Ms Jiuta.
"In recent weeks, FCCC has received reports that some taxi operators were considering reducing services and, in some instances, temporarily ceasing operations due to the increasing cost pressures caused by rising fuel prices. This highlighted the need for timely intervention to ensure services remain available to the public."
"Our assessment focused specifically on the direct impact of fuel price increases on taxi operations. The approved adjustment reflects only the necessary increase linked to fuel costs, ensuring transparency, fairness, and sustainability."
Under the revised fares, the drop charge for taxis in Viti Levu, Vanua Levu, Ovalau, Taveuni and Kadavu will increase from 10 cents to 14 cents per 100 metres, while Nadi International Airport taxis will increase from 15 cents to 21 cents per 100 metres.
Airport taxis outside Nadi International Airport will also increase from 10 cents to 14 cents per 100 metres. Flag fall and waiting charges across all categories remain unchanged.
Ms Jiuta said the measure was temporary and would remain under review as fuel markets stabilised. She said FCCC would continue monitoring international fuel prices and industry conditions and would reassess the adjustment if fuel prices eased.
