At 82, when many have long stepped away from classrooms, Losana Dioi is still learning, teaching and inspiring those around her.

The retired schoolteacher from Naseakula, Labasa, graduated on Friday from a Fiji National University (FNU) short course in Nabalebale village, Savusavu.

Ms Dioi, the oldest participant in the programme, completed the Rural Remote Maritime Training course in Certificate Screen Printing Artwork and Designs.

Already known in her community for tutoring screen printing and floristry, she said the experience added to her lifelong passion for learning.

“I have taken part in short courses before, and this year I graduated from FNU. My community encouraged me to join this programme to learn new skills,” Ms Dioi said.

She said the course was not only about skills, but also connection.

“This was a short course, but I wished it could have been longer. It taught us how to mix colours and create new designs,” she said.

The grandmother-of-two said she also learned how to cut stencils and print — skills she now shares with others in her village.

She continues to teach artistry and flower arrangement in Naseakula and hopes to take part in more courses in the future.

“My message to women is to keep moving, keep making a difference, and pursue your dreams,” she said.

Ms Dioi said her love for learning and teaching keeps her active and fulfilled — a passion she continues to pass on to others.
