Fiji Police Force is installing CCTV cameras with facial recognition and number plate reading capabilities along the Suva-Nausori Corridor as part of a Safe City Project.
Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu revealed yesterday that civil work had progressed at 15 sites, with an additional 17 sites ready for civil works.
The cameras will be connected to police command centers for real-time monitoring 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

"The installation of CCTV cameras and high-speed fiber optics using technology to enhance public safety by allowing us to monitor areas in real time from the Eastern, Southern and Central Command Centers," Mr Tudravu said.
The Safe City Project was signed with Telecom Fiji earlier this year and includes cameras with thermal capabilities.
Mr Tudravu said the cameras would include number plates and facial recognition technology.
He added that CCTV cameras at Labasa market were already connected to the Northern Divisional Command Center, with Savusavu, Seaqaqa and Nabouwalu markets also linked to the system.
"This is the way forward for all of us, the use of technology towards crime prevention efforts," Mr Tudravu said.
The Police Commissioner said consultation was underway to expand the Safe City Project to Nadi and Lautoka corridors, with 50 sites already identified.
Integration with other agencies such as the Land Transport Authority and Fijian Elections Office was also in consultation phases.
Mr Tudravu made the announcement during the signing of a memorandum of understanding for safer markets at the Suva Civic Center.
He thanked the Government and Minister for Local Government for their support in advancing the use of technology in crime prevention.
The Commissioner said the initiative would help create safer towns and cities for all Fijians.
