The Colonial War Memorial Hospital (CWMH) will introduce 12-hour nursing shifts from tomorrow as part of a temporary measure to manage ongoing staff shortages.

The Ministry of Health and Medical Services said the adjustment was an internal operational response aimed at ensuring the continuity, safety and reliability of essential hospital services.

The decision follows internal assessments by hospital management, including reviews focused on strengthening patient safety and service delivery.

The Ministry said the change was carefully considered by hospital leadership and nursing representatives, with logistical and support arrangements being addressed to safeguard staff welfare.

The 12-hour shift arrangement is temporary and will remain in place until September 2026, when nursing interns complete their internship programme and take up full postings.

The Ministry assured the public that patient safety and quality of care remain its highest priority.

It said all essential services at CWMH — including emergency, inpatient, outpatient and dialysis services — would continue as normal.

Measures are also being pursued to strengthen staffing capacity in both the short and long term.

The Ministry acknowledged the dedication and professionalism of nursing staff at CWMH and thanked the public for their understanding and cooperation.
