Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu has declared the country’s war on drugs a “life and death” battle, after police seized nearly five tons of marijuana last month.
He said more than 3.5 tons were from Kadavu as part of ‘Operation Sasamaki’.
The operation, launched early last month, led to a 93 per cent spike in drug case registrations, with more than 100 arrests and more than $70,000 in criminal proceeds seized.

While methamphetamine continues to appear in smaller quantities, Mr Tudravu urges communities and religious leaders to help fight the illicit trade.
More than 100 arrests were made, with 96 people charged and apprehended in court. The Police Commissioner has labelled the war on drugs ‘a life-and-death situation.’
He said it had become a matter of life because illicit drugs were harmful to one’s health, and some individuals had turned to illicit drugs as a mean of survival.
