Fans, computer processor units, air condition parts, cans, bottles, pipes and even bags were collected from the Nubukalou Creek yesterday.

This was during a clean up campaign that involved a combined effort from the community, the Suva City Council and the Department of Environment.

Suva and Lami special administrator chair Isikeli Tikoduadua, said it was good to see the voluntary effort and it was important to ensure that waterways remained clean.

“We appreciate what the members of the public have done today. The bigger issue here is making sure that people stop littering and polluting rivers and creeks,” he said.

“We are hoping to revamp the creek area and its surrounding, but we need people to stop polluting the creek.”

Permanent Secretary for Environment Joshua Wycliffe said the bigger outcome for the clean up was awareness.

“When you have awareness, you have increased consciousness of the environment. This was a two-hour exercise but I believe a bigger outcome has been achieved,” he said.

The cleanup was mooted by the Suva SUPers  headed by Reverend James Bhagwan and Roderick Lal.

Suva SUPers is a collective that gather daily and paddle in Suva’s Laucala Bay area.

They managed to get 12 different organisations togethers including the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) who would analyse the type of litter collected from the creek.
