The Guinness World Record holder’s entry for identifying the most companies by his logo in 30 seconds, Anush Maharaj, was rejected eight times before it achieved recognition.

The 20-year-old from Nagigi Village in Labasa broke the record that was previously held for three years by India.

This makes him the first Fijian to ever hold such Guinness World Record.

Mr Maharaj said he made around 20 attempts on compiling the video before sending it for review to the Guinness World Records Limited.

I had to make a two-minute slow motion video, with no edit so that they see that I didn’t cheat.

“I had to make a two-minute slow motion video, with no edit so that they see that I didn’t cheat,” Mr Maharaj said.

He applied for this category in January 29 this year, six months later a set of strict guidelines were shared to him through email, to follow when attempting the challenge.

He made his first attempt at the Sukuna Park in the presence of his friends who acted as witnesses, and a timekeeper.

“They select 100 different logos which are shuffled so I don’t know which logo shows up during the 30 second time,” he said.

“When the 30 seconds time starts, you will have no idea which logo will appear and these logos won’t be fully clear, it will be partially covered so I have to be really quick to identify the logos correctly.”

Once all the videos were shared to the Guinness World Record team, it would take around a month to review and revert with a decision.

When Mr Maharaj was informed through email of his recognition on May 29, it was a bitter sweet moment because he also learnt that he was fired from work that morning.

Mr Maharaj is now completing his studies in Certificate Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning at, the Fiji National University (FNU) ’s Derrick Campus.

In 2023, he created his TikTok account in an attempt to create awareness on social issues such as suicide, drugs and mental health.

His TikTok account has 5,139 followers and 138. 8k likes.

He aims to break another world record for most universities identified in one minute.

“I dedicate this achievement to my friends, family who helped me win this as well as to the Nagigi Primary School and Labasa College where I completed my primary and secondary education,” Mr Maharaj said.
