Converting traditional knowledge and craftsmanship into cash has been a challenge for communities in Kabara, Lau.

But a cooperative in business to support them has now secured a brand-new vehicle, partially funded by the Government. They're optimistic it will improve logistics, benefitting the island's population, 80 per cent of whom are dependent on handicrafts for income generation.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Cooperatives, Manoa Kamikamica, on Tuesday officially handed over the $30,000 Volkswagen Caddy Maxi Van to the Kabara Yavusa Ono Co-operative Limited, also known as KY6.

Secretary for the Kabara Yavusa Ono Co-operative, Kitione Raratabu, said that the new vehicle would help streamline the transportation process of raw materials sourced from villages to the workshop on Viti Levu and finished products directly to customers.

"It's something that we really hope will be beneficial for us in the long run," he added.

Kabara Yavusa Ono Co-operative was one of 17 cooperatives that received a grant last year through the Ministry of Cooperatives' funding programme. Support for cooperatives has increased to $600,000 for this financial year, up from $400,000 allocated in the previous year.

Mr Kamikamica said the government remained committed to fostering socio-economic development at the local, grassroots level and improving the quality of life for ordinary, hardworking Fijians, like those in Kabara.

"With this vehicle, I envision a future filled with greater productivity and streamlined logistics for KY6," he said.

"It will facilitate your ability to reach new markets, expand your customer base, and showcase the remarkable craftsmanship that your co-operative has to offer.

"The sky is the limit for KY6 as you continue to shine a light on the beauty of Kabara’s artistry."
