There is a need to harvest river water that flows out to sea, says the Minister for Waterways, Mahendra Reddy.

Mr Reddy said there were countries struggling for water and for rivers, but in Fiji “we are passing water from rivers to the sea”.

“We need to harvest that water and divert it to reservoirs and dams for the communities along the river banks to use," he said

“By the time the water comes down to the river mouth there will be a small amount.

“But we still need that to come to the river mouth because communities live there too."

Mr Reddy also urged people not to be a contributing factor to flooding and clogging of water ways. He urged people not to discard waste in waterways.
