Government MP and former Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica has called for a more inclusive understanding of what it means to be Fijian, saying Indo-Fijians “belong here” and should be recognised as Fijians.

In a personal reflection shared after a discussion among former scholars, Mr Kamikamica said his views had evolved over time.

“When was in my 20's, to be Fijian was to be Taukei. Partly upbringing, partly insecurity, partly the Economic dominance of Indians and of course experience reinforced by prejudice.”

He said his perspective had shifted significantly over the past 35 years.

“The Indians were brought here involuntarily and have made Fiji their home. They have represented Fiji in sport, Govt everywhere. They know no other place.”

“So in my view, they belong here. They are our Brothers and sisters. They are Fijian.”

Mr Kamikamica said recognising others as Fijians would not diminish iTaukei identity.

“Does it make a difference to us as Taukei if we call them Fijians? Absolutely not.”

He aligned himself with calls for unity.

“I am with Ratu Ligani. Lets be inclusive. Unify Fiji.”

Drawing a comparison with religion, he added:

“And Finally, do we call Christians Indo Christians, Taukei Christians etc? No. All of us are Christians saved by grace.”

“Something to ponder about this Easter.”
