Sushil Sharma is the first lawyer in Labasa to win a constitutional matter for a Member of Parliament which was held before the High Court in Labasa.

Originally from Naleba, Labasa, the 46-year-old son of a sugarcane cutter has been running his own firm, Sushil Sharma Lawyers for 15 years.

He said it was the first time for the High Court in Labasa to conduct a hearing through Zoom and for him to act in a case of court of dispute for Mosese Bulitavu.

It was held last Friday.

He was given only one week to work with the court registry and prepare his submissions.

“Names don’t bring success so never go after the name of a lawyer to fight your case,” Mr Sharma said.

“Instead believe in the lawyer’s capability to deliver justice to you.”

He said laws developed every day, and no one can hang on to old laws and methodology.

For a man who believes in change, he said nothing came easy.

While being a law student, he worked as an assistant court clerk at the Sigatoka Registry.

After graduation he worked as a legal research officer for the High Court of Fiji in Suva for two years.

Being the eldest of three siblings and the only lawyer in the family, he decided to return to Labasa to take up his responsibilities.

“I am just an ordinary human being with an aim to help others including my family,” he said.

“I have two children, and my son is also following me by pursuing a law degree.

“Whether you be a sugarcane cutter’s son or a businessman’s son, what matters is your good heart to serve the people.”

Mr Sharma is known best for winning civil cases, like for the Valebasoga Tropik Board, the Waiqele Sawmill Pte Limited and other renowned companies in Labasa.
