For the first time, families in Naigani Village in Batiki, Lomaiviti, can connect with loved ones and the wider world from their own homes.

The village has launched a community-run internet service using a Starlink system, installed and managed by the Naigani Development Committee.

Operating as a shared Wi-Fi network, the service is funded through a voucher system that allows residents to buy affordable access. Money collected from voucher sales will pay the monthly subscription, with any surplus channelled into projects under the Naigani Village Development Plan.

“When villagers buy vouchers to use the internet, the money goes back to our village fund for development,” he said.

Komai Naigani Ratu Jope Sigaruarua described the installation as a significant milestone.

“We are thankful to the Naigani Village Development Committee for arranging the installation of Starlink in our village,” he said.

“Now, we can sit at home and talk to our children on the main islands and overseas. We also have access to markets to sell our produce such as ‘uto’ (breadfruit), ‘voivoi’ (pandanus leaf) and coconuts.”

He said the voucher system ensured that spending remained within the community.

Village leaders believe reliable internet access will open doors to online markets, support small businesses and improve financial literacy.

It will also strengthen access to health and education services, while helping residents explore remote work and connect with government agencies.

Importantly, the service is expected to improve communication during emergencies, enhancing early warning awareness and disaster response coordination.

For this small maritime community, leaders say the project is more than just a technological upgrade.

It is a practical step towards economic independence, stronger resilience and better opportunities for the next generation.
