Navua set for town status

Navua is tentatively set to become a town on August 28, with the move expected to strengthen local administration and drive infrastructure, investment and development.

Minister for Local Government Maciu Nalumisa confirmed August 28 as the tentative date for Navua’s official declaration, with final endorsement expected before the end of this month.

Mr Nalumisa said town status would bring significant benefits to Navua, particularly in infrastructure and development.

“Once you declare Navua a town, it comes with a lot of positives, in terms of development, especially infrastructure development,” Mr Nalumisa said.

Development plans are already taking shape, including the planned Navua Plaza.

“It will be a big feature for Navua,” Mr Nalumisa said.

Navua has grown into a major commercial and residential centre between Suva and Sigatoka, increasing pressure for improved infrastructure and services.

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka welcomed the milestone, describing it as part of Government’s achievements for the year.

He encouraged other smaller municipalities to pursue town status so they could have their own administrations and take greater responsibility for their development.

“Residents of Navua, do make use of the opportunities that will come with the town’s new status.”

For Navua, August 28 could mark a significant step in its transition from a growing municipality to an officially recognised town.
