Stay off rough seas, MSAF tells small-boat operators
MSAF has urged vessel owners and operators to ensure boats are seaworthy and carry life-saving equipment.

The Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF) has warned small-boat operators to stop operating in areas under strong wind and rough sea warnings as a search continues for six people missing in Lau waters.
The warning comes as strong winds and rough to very rough seas hamper efforts to find a fibreglass boat that failed to arrive in Fulaga after leaving Namuka Island on Thursday, August 6.
MSAF said small craft and fibreglass boats must cease operations in areas affected by strong wind and rough sea warnings.

A nationwide Strong Wind Warning issued on Thursday warned of southeasterly winds of 20 to 30 knots and rough to very rough seas.
The missing half-cabin fibreglass boat, powered by a 40-horsepower outboard engine, left Namuka Island at about 10am on Thursday bound for Fulaga.
Three fibreglass boats reportedly made the journey. Two arrived safely in Fulaga, while the third, carrying six people, remains missing.
The Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC) Fiji was alerted on Thursday evening and activated a search and rescue operation.
Navy search and rescue mission coordinators worked overnight with relevant authorities, vessels and community contacts in the area.
MSAF said plans were under way to deploy surface and air assets on Friday to expand the search.
However, the authority said strong winds and rough to very rough seas were hindering the operation.
There were also concerns, based on reports received, that the missing boat may not have been carrying life-saving equipment.
MSAF has urged vessel owners and operators to ensure boats are seaworthy and carry life-saving equipment, working communication equipment, extra fuel, distress flares and lifejackets for everyone on board.
Mariners travelling between Namuka, Fulaga and surrounding waters have also been asked to look out for a white half-cabin fibreglass boat with a 40-horsepower engine.
Anyone who sees the vessel or has information that could assist the search should contact JRCC Fiji on toll-free number 1539 or the nearest Police station.
The search continues.
