Ratu Sukuna Memorial School (RSMS) head girl and Coca-Cola Games gold medallist Loata Lewageena (pictured) is determined to make her final year a memorable one.

Speaking to SUNSports yesterday, Lewageena said she would like to set a new record in the senior girl’s discus throw.

Last year, she broke the intermediate girls record twice, with her first and second throws which

was 44.87 and 46.02m respectively. The previous record was 42.54m.

“This year, I plan to improve more on my technic and confidence, which was what I had lacked last year,” Lewageena said.

“There’s a lot of expectations for me to break another record, but pressure feels good. It motivates me.”

Her main focus this year is improving her technique and confidence.

“Sometimes when I see a big crowd, I forget what I learned in training. This year, I’m working on that.”

Balancing leadership and athletics have been challenging, but she remains grateful.

Her goal is simple; throw further than last year’s 48.46m and continue inspiring younger throwers.

“This year I am planning to encourage other girls to also try field events as it is an area where they can easily get a medal,” she said.

Her advice to young athletes is: “Trust yourself, trust the process, and just keep moving forward.”
