Fijian Drua re-sign hooker Penaia Cakobau for 2027 season

With the departure of Zuriel Togiatama, the Swire Shipping Fijian Drua has secured the services of Penaia Cakobau.

In a statement yesterday, the Drua confirmed that Cakobau has extended his stay with the club for another season, securing his place in the squad for the 2027 Shop N Save Super Rugby Pacific campaign.

Cakobau had joined the Drua ahead of the 2026 season on a short-term contract as injury cover and has since impressed the Club and fans alike.

Looking forward to another season in Drua colours, Cakobau said: “I’m truly grateful for the opportunity to represent the Drua in the 2027 Super Rugby Pacific season.” The Somosomo, Taveuni native made four appearances for the Drua during the 2026 season, providing valuable depth and versatility to the club’s front row.

Cakobau stood out in Drua’s Round 9 clash against the Western Force at Churchill Park, where he crossed for his first Super Rugby try.

The experienced forward also showed his versatility in the same match, stepping into the loosehead prop role following a late injury to Haereiti Hetet despite hooker being his regular position.

Apart from Cakobau, the other hookers in the Drua squad are Sairusi Ravudi and Kavaia Tagivetaua.

Before joining the Drua, Cakobau had built an extensive rugby journey across Fiji and overseas. He returned to Fiji in 2018 and represented Suva in the Skipper Cup before heading back to New Zealand, where he was involved with North Harbour.

Cakobau’s performances also earned him selection in the Flying Fijians squad for the 2024 Pacific Nations Cup and subsequent end-of-year tour to Europe.

He was also part of the Queen Victoria School’s Deans Trophy winning Under-18 side in 2011.
