Despite having a tough competition from senior players, Sikeli Basiyalo will make his debut for the Fiji men's rugby sevens team at next weekend's Hong Kong Sevens tournament.

This was after the former Cuvu College student was named in Osea Kolinisau's coached-side yesterday.

He joined the training squad three weeks ago after an impressive showing for the Fijian Drua during the McDonald's Coral Coast tournament in January.

The 21-year-old hails from Volivoli Village in Nadroga and shares maternal links to Nabukelevu- i-ra in Kadavu.

He started playing rugby sevens with Aflame Brothers before he joined the Drua development squad.

"There has been a lot of learning from the senior players on hard work and perseverance," Basiyalo said.

"The environment is quite different from the Drua, training is intense for sevens.

"There is a tough competition for my spot as there are many senior players who have been on the side longer and are experienced."

He acknowledged his support system for their upbringing and contribution to all he has achieved in rugby.

"I thank God for His provision in my life and also to my family for their support and always praying for me."

Asked what motivates him daily, Basiyalo quoted a Bible verse from Psalms 20:7- "Some trust in chariots, and some in horses: but we will remember the name of the Lord our God."

The team leaves for Hong Kong on Saturday.

Fiji squad: Jeremaia Matana, Kavekini Tanivanuakula, Joseva Talacolo, Sevuloni Mocenacagi, Isikeli Basiyalo, Sakiusa Siqila, Filipe Sauturaga, Ioane Teba, George Bose, Jioji Nasova, Manueli Maisamoa, Vuiviwa Naduvalu, Alusio Vakadranu.
