At just 22 years old, Uraia Aune, from Sasa Village in the province of Ba, is about to make history for the Centre for Appropriate Technology and Development (CATD) in Nadave.
Next Tuesday, Uraia will leave Fiji for Japan, becoming the first fully sponsored CATD student to work under a Japanese government programme. He will spend three years with Akita Nissan Company, one of the world’s leading automotive firms, under a contract that could be extended to five years.
For Mr Aune, the journey has not been easy. Growing up in a humble family, he faced many challenges that often made him doubt his path.
“There were times I wanted to give up, but I always thought about my family,” he said.
“Their sacrifices kept me moving forward. I knew I had to make something out of this opportunity, not
just for me, but for them too.”
Mr Aune studied automotive engineering at CATD, where he built the skills that have now opened
international doors. His achievement is seen as a proud moment for the institution and for young people across Fiji.
“This is not just about me,” Mr Aune said. “It is for all the youths out there who feel like their dreams are too far.
Japanese Ambassador to Fiji, Rokuichiro Michii, congratulated Mr Aune during the opening of new
CATD facilities.
“Students like Mr Aune show the true meaning of collaboration between Fiji and Japan. We are very happy to
welcome him to Japan, and this is only the beginning,” he said.
As he prepares to board his flight, Mr Aune said he carries his family, his village, and Fiji with him.
“I am nervous, but I am also excited. I just want to make my parents proud and return home one day with knowledge and skills to give back.”
Mr Aune is urging youths in Fiji to take advantage of the opportunities that come their way.
“If I can do it, they can too. Never give up.”
