At just 18 years old, Roy Veremalumu from Namarai, Nakorotubu in Ra has set his sights on a dream many would call ambitious, becoming a doctor.
Currently in Year 13 at Marist Brothers High School, Mr Veremalumu shared his excitement during the UniFiji Open Day today, where he was introduced to the University of Fiji for the first time.
“For many students like me, we always hear about University of the South Pacific (USP) and Fiji National University (FNU). But today I got to learn about UniFiji, and it has opened my eyes to another great option,” he said.

Mr Veremalumu plans to pursue a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) at UniFiji, aiming to join the medical field not just for himself, but to make a difference in the lives of others.
“I want to be a doctor because I like helping people, especially those in need,” Mr Veremalumu said.
“Also, I noticed that there are more women in this field, and I believe more men should step in too. We can make a big difference.”
Mr Veremalumu also has maternal links to Vanuatu, and says his family support has played a big part in shaping his future.
He encouraged younger students to focus on their education and follow their dreams.
“My advice to young children is to study hard, listen to their parents, get a good job, and most importantly, put God in the center of everything,” he said.
His words were full of maturity and purpose, as he looked around the UniFiji campus with hope and determination.
Mr Veremalumu’s visit to UniFiji may have been his first, but it has left a lasting impression. And if his plans go as intended, it may also be the first step in a journey that leads him to become one of Fiji’s future doctors.
