Verenaisi Shekinah Waikarawa, 22, will carry the values of solesolevaki (working together) and duavata (unity) as a queen contestant during the Vodafone Festival of the Friendly North.
The Fiji Sugar Corporation Limited-sponsored Labasa Mill weighbridge clerk has chosen combating drug and substance abuse among young people in the North as her advocacy focus.
“I chose this topic because I want to advocate on the major issues that are already a threat and are also affecting our youth in this generation,” Ms Waikarawa said.

“I joined this festival because I believe a crown should represent more than beauty. It should represent purpose, courage and service.”
Ms Waikarawa is from Nabalebale Village, Cakaudrove, and has maternal links to Namoli Village, Labasa.
“It deeply saddens me to see how drug use is affecting our communities and, most importantly, our young people. I want to use the festival to speak for those who feel unheard, to encourage our youths to make better choices, and to remind them that their circumstances do not have to define their future.
“I believe that through solesolevaki and duavata, we can rebuild the strength and unity of our communities and create a healthier and wealthier North.”
The University of the South Pacific student said balancing work, education, family responsibilities and personal growth had taught her that achieving goals required patience, discipline and resilience.
The festival begins on August 29 at Subrail Park in Labasa.
