Young people spend a lot of time online and need to understand how to stay safe, responsible and respectful in the digital world, says Miss Vodafone Festival of the Friendly North contestant Salote Shirley Rakoroi.

The 19-year-old, sponsored by Velvet Lounge, is vying for the title at the end of the month.

Her advocacy focuses on cyber safety, with the message: “Helping young people protect themselves online and making responsible choices for a healthier North.”

Ms Rakoroi is a University of the South Pacific (USP) student pursuing a Bachelor of Science and Graduate Certificate in Education, majoring in mathematics and computing science.

“I joined this festival to challenge myself, build confidence, meet new people and use my voice to promote an important message to young people and my community,” Ms Rakoroi said.

“I aim to gain confidence, inspire other young people, promote cyber safety and make a positive contribution to my community.”

Originally from Yalava, Sasa district, Macuata, Ms Rakoroi also has maternal links to Wailevu Village in Tunuloa, Cakaudrove.

“I am a young, determined student who believes in learning, serving my community and encouraging others,” she said.

“I believe that with unity, knowledge and the right choices, we can create a safer and healthier North.”
