“We cannot change the statistics of yesterday, but as youth, we hold the power to shape the story of tomorrow,” says Ria Rishani Prakash.

As one of the seven queen contestants in the Vodafone Festival of the Friendly North, Ms Prakash wants to use her platform to encourage youths to help protect the Northern Division from Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV).

Sponsored by Hometown Hardware, the 19-year-old hopes to turn her advocacy message into action and ensure no one feels alone or afraid to seek the care they deserve.

“Courage begins when we speak up for what matters and we need to create awareness on HIV,” Ms Prakash said.

“We must accept the fact that HIV cases are increasing day by day and we need to protect our loved ones, colleagues, community and nation as a whole.”

The University of the South Pacific student, who is originally from Boca, Labasa, is not focused on winning the crown but wants to be known as a young voice for change.

“HIV is not just a health issue; it affects individuals, families, communities and has long-term economic implications for our nation,” she said.

“We call on community leaders, faith-based organisations, business houses, youth groups, and families to stand with me in raising awareness and promoting responsible behaviour.”

Ms Prakash is also calling on people to remember the ABCs of prevention:

  • A – Abstain from premarital sex and say no to injectable illicit drug practice.
  • B – Be faithful to your spouse or partner.
  • C – Consult health officials as soon as practicable for testing, counselling or treatment.

The weeklong festival begins on August 29 at Subrail Park in Labasa.
