The streets of Labasa Town came alive yesterday with the energetic performance of the Washington Tin Band, marking a festive highlight after the absence of a 2024 New Year’s street party in the Northern Division.
The 13-member band from Lami Village, Suva, performed outside Dutt’s Shoe World and Chinatown Shops, creating lively music with empty drums, tins, sticks, and containers. Band leader Mosese Ravadra said the entertainment tour began earlier this week in Bua.
“We’re spending a few days in Labasa visiting villages before heading to Savusavu and Taveuni by the end of the week,” Mr Ravadra said.

This marks the second consecutive year the band has travelled from Viti Levu to Vanua Levu to spread New Year joy.
During their live performances, a tin is placed among the musicians and a dancer, inviting spectators to contribute money.
Mr Ravadra explained the proceeds would support the band members, particularly students, with back-to-school expenses.
“There’s no fixed amount,” Mr Ravadra said.
“Whatever the generous people of the friendly North bless us with will be used for our children, who have sacrificed their time to play music during this tour,” he said.
Mr Ravadra added that a second group of younger band members is performing on Suva streets, ensuring no one misses out on the New Year’s spirit.
“Our goal is to include everyone in this celebration and bring joy wherever we go,” he said.
The Washington Tin Band’s initiative combines entertainment with community support, making their efforts a meaningful start to the year for families in the North and beyond.
