As families await improved paediatric care, contractor changes have delayed progress on the Children’s Ward at Labasa Hospital.

Assistant Minister for Health and Medical Services Penioni Ravunawa toured the hospital today and provided an update on the project, acknowledging delays caused by changes to the contractor.

Mr Ravunawa said the contractor initially engaged to carry out the works was replaced, requiring the ministry to revisit contract documentation in line with government procedures.

“When there is a change in contractor, we have to go back to the contract documents. These matters need to be taken to the Ministry of Finance and then returned to us,” he said.

He said the Ministry of Health makes recommendations, after which governance processes must be followed before approvals are granted and work can resume.

Mr Ravunawa acknowledged concerns raised by families and hospital staff, noting that while the process can be lengthy, it is necessary to ensure accountability, transparency and proper management of public funds.

Labasa Hospital Superintendent Dr Jaoji Vulibeci confirmed that, in the interim, the tuberculosis (TB) ward is being used as the children’s ward to maintain continuity of care.

Mr Vulibeci said the temporary arrangement allows the hospital to continue providing essential services for young patients, despite space constraints.

“Our focus remains on patient care. Using the TB ward for children is a temporary measure until the dedicated ward is completed,” he said.

The ministry reiterated its commitment to completing the Children’s Ward upgrade as soon as governance requirements are finalised, stressing the importance of improved facilities for children in the Northern Division.
