The FLIPS Gym in Nasese, Suva, is now open to all civil servants, so grab your workout gear and take the first step toward a stronger, healthier you.

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka officially opened the new gym at the Fiji Learning Institute for Public Service (FLIPS) yesterday afternoon highlighting Government’s commitment to health, resilience, and workforce wellbeing.

Addressing invited guests, Cabinet ministers, and public servants, Mr Rabuka said the gym reflected a cultural shift in how health was viewed within the civil service.

"A strong nation begins with strong people, and strong people take care of themselves,” he said.

“This gym is not just for athletes. It’s for everyone who wants to take small but meaningful steps toward better health.”

The facility is part of Government’s broader Strategic Framework for Civil Service Reform and Whole-of-Government Health and Wellness Agenda, which supports initiatives like Wellness Wednesdays and workplace wellness programmes.

“Wellness is now recognised not just as a Human Resources initiative but as a key driver of effective service delivery,” he said.

The new facility sits at the heart of FLIPS’ “Wellness Wednesday” programme, a weekly moment of renewal in the work-week.

Mr Rabuka also shared personal reflections on fitness, from his former rugby and athletics days to his current morning gym routines.

“Whether it’s in a gym, on a field, or in your garden, staying active is staying grounded,” he said. “And being grounded helps us lead better, serve smarter, and live well.”

Japanese Ambassador to Fiji, Rokuichiro Michii, also spoke at the event, sharing Japan’s long-standing tradition of daily radio exercises.

He introduced Professor Tatsuo Araki, a visiting sports science expert, who demonstrated a modernised “Taiso” routine, an inclusive exercise programme designed for all ages and abilities.

The Japan Gymnastic Association has offered the exercise music and movements free to the public worldwide, with hopes that it will promote healthier lifestyles in Fiji and beyond.

The Prime Minister closed with a playful challenge to the audience:

“If anyone needs a bit of motivation, I’m happy to challenge a few of you to a friendly set of push-ups!”

Public Service Commission (PSC) chairperson, Luke Rokovada, said the new gym was part of a larger initiative to promote overall workplace wellbeing and productivity.

“It’s all intended to be part of the overall improvement in the work environment, workplace, and work performance of civil servants,” he said.

“The gym is just one part. People can still stay active through home exercises, walking, or cycling. You don’t need to spend much to live a healthy lifestyle, just consistency, good nutrition, and adequate rest.”

The gymnasium is for all civil servants and it opens from 2.30pm to 8.30pm daily to allow staff to train after work.

The commission has plans underway to develop a structured programme for civil servants’ gym use. Two bicycles will also be made available at the facility for those who prefer cycling.
