India pledges 100-bed hospital, dialysis units and sea ambulances for Fiji

Fiji is set to benefit from a 100-bed super specialty hospital in Suva, along with dialysis units and sea ambulances, following announcements made during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s meeting with Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka in New Delhi on August 25, 2025.
According to the Indian Prime Minister, the hospital and medical support units are part of broader initiatives aimed at improving healthcare access in Fiji.
He also said that Jan Aushadhi Kendras would be opened to provide affordable, high-quality medicines, and a ‘Jaipur Foot’ camp would be organised to ensure no citizen is left behind in pursuing their dreams.

PM Modi highlighted ongoing cooperation in agriculture, noting that cowpea seeds sent from India were thriving in Fiji’s soil. India will also provide 12 agricultural drones and two mobile soil testing laboratories to strengthen local farming practices.
Education and culture were also emphasized, with plans to send Indian teachers to the University of Fiji to teach Hindi and Sanskrit, while Fijian Pandits are expected to participate in India’s Gita Mahotsav, deepening ties between the two nations.
On defence and security, Prime Minister Modi noted that India would provide training and equipment to enhance Fiji’s maritime security and assist in cybersecurity and data protection efforts.
Sports cooperation was highlighted as a point of cultural connection.
Mr Modi referred to Waisale Serevi, the Fijian rugby legend who previously coached the Indian rugby team, and said an Indian coach is set to work with Fiji’s cricket team.
Modi also reaffirmed collaboration on renewable energy and climate change, particularly solar energy, and emphasized Fiji’s role as a hub for India’s engagement with Pacific Island nations. He described the partnership as a shared journey for the development of the Global South, with both countries committed to ensuring no nation is left behind.
