For Bevleen Esta, yesterday’s Fiji National University graduation ceremony was more than just receiving a Bachelor of Education in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET).

It was the reward of courage, sacrifice and unwavering faith.

Originally from Labasa, Ms Esta described her achievement as an emotional milestone after years of juggling her many responsibilities.

A mother of three, teacher, housewife, and the wife of a Methodist Church pastor in the Indian Division is a plateful.

“This journey wasn’t easy for me,” Ms Esta said.

“But through God’s grace and power, I was able to do this.”

Her parents’ humble background served as her greatest motivation.

Her late father once worked as a casual labourer for Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC) and her mother was a housemaid. Neither completed school.

“My mum only went up to Class Two and my dad never attended school,” she said.

“Through their hard work and sacrifice, I am here today.

“There were days I slept at 1am, 2am or even 3am just to finish my assignments.” She credited her husband as her strongest support system.

“He helped with the children, did the housework and stood by me during my late-night studies. He even travelled with me from Tavua to Lautoka or Suva for classes.”

Her father passed away in 2023, a loss she still feels deeply.

“He always said he wanted his daughter to become a teacher. I really miss him,” she said.

“Through God’s grace and their support, I am standing here.”

Ms Esta began her studies in 2022 and completed them this year without taking a break.

She thanked her lecturers, school administrators and colleagues for their guidance and support.
