Twenty-five-year-old Ronald Sigrah from Rabi Island overcame academic setbacks and the challenge of being away from his family to graduate with a Diploma in Applied Fisheries and a Bachelor of Science in Fisheries.
Mr Sigrah, of Tabwewa Village began his academic journey in 2020 when he enrolled in the diploma programme.
However, he admitted struggling with distractions and a lack of focus, which delayed completion of the programme beyond the expected two years.

“Too much hanging out, not focusing on my schoolwork,” Mr Sigrah said.
He later paused his studies before returning to complete the programme.
Despite the setbacks, Mr Sigrah persevered and enrolled in a bachelor’s degree programme in 2024 while also working in the fisheries sector.
He balanced his studies with employment at a fisheries-related company, managing both responsibilities through discipline and determination.
During his studies, Mr Sigrah stayed with his uncle and aunt in Nakasi while his parents were away working in Kiribati.
Because of the distance, his parents were unable to attend the graduation ceremony in person and instead joined through a video call.
Mr Sigrah said emotions ran high as his parents watched him graduate online and were moved to tears by the achievement.
He described the moment as overwhelming and emotional, especially as the first member of his family to attain that level of academic qualification.
Mr Sigrah dedicated his achievement to his parents and relatives who supported him throughout his studies, crediting their encouragement, along with discipline and faith, for helping him succeed.
He hopes to secure stable employment in the fisheries sector and continue building his career.
