Young man defies odds to shine in nursing, making parents proud
Shanil Reddy says support from his parents and a desire to help people drove him to complete his nursing degree.

In a field often dominated by women, Shanil Reddy of Qelewaqa, Labasa, has proven that determination can break boundaries.
The 21-year-old graduated with a Bachelor of Nursing Science from the Then India Sanmarga Ikya (TISI) Sangam College of Nursing and Health Care Education during the graduation ceremony at the Civic Centre in Labasa today.
The three-year programme, which he began in 2021, tested his resilience, discipline and commitment to serving others.

Mr Reddy said he chose nursing because of his desire to help people in vulnerable moments.
“I always wanted to care for those in need, and this profession gives me purpose,” Mr Reddy said.
Raised by humble parents, Rajesh Subrail Reddy and Tara Wati, he grew up watching the sacrifices they made to support his education. Their pride was evident as they watched their son receive his qualification.
“We knew he could overcome every challenge,” Mrs Wati said.
Mr Reddy said the journey had not been easy, especially juggling clinical work, assignments and long study hours.
“There were days I felt exhausted, but I kept reminding myself why I started, and the support from my parents kept me going,” he said.
He hopes his journey inspires other young men to consider nursing as a meaningful and respected career.
“Nursing needs more men who are willing to serve with compassion, and if you have the heart for it, you will succeed,” he said.
Mr Reddy now looks forward to beginning his professional career and giving back to the community that shaped him.
