The Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji has urged vessel operators and the public to avoid travelling by sea during unsafe weather conditions following a maritime incident in the Lau waters last week.

The authority said a fibre-glass boat transporting passengers to the Lomaiviti Princess XII reportedly capsized in rough seas in Lau waters on Thursday, January 15, 2026.

In a statement yesterday, the authority extended its sympathy to passengers and families affected by the incident and reminded operators that voyages should not proceed when weather conditions are unsafe.

“Strict adherence to official weather advisories is critical, as proceeding in rough sea conditions places lives at serious risk,” the authority said.

The authority confirmed investigations would be carried out into the fibre-glass vessel involved, as well as the operations of the Lomaiviti Princess XII.

This includes loading activities that were reportedly undertaken during rough weather conditions.

The investigations will be conducted in line with maritime safety regulations and procedures.

The authority said it remained committed to improving maritime safety through regulatory oversight, collaboration with vessel operators and relevant agencies, and the continued strengthening of safety standards across Fiji’s maritime sector.
