Fiji marked its 55th year of independence on October 10, celebrating the nation’s rich culture, heritage, and progress as a developing country in the South Pacific.
The theme for this year’s Fiji Day celebration — Peace, Unity and Progress for All — reflects the country’s multicultural foundation. Despite cultural and religious differences, Fiji remains united, with peace deeply rooted in the Fijian way of life.

Fiji Day at the Great Wall of China

As part of the China International Press Communication Centre (CIPCC) programme, 39 international journalists visited the Juyongguan section of the Great Wall on Fiji Day. The group included media representatives from Asia-Pacific, Eurasia, the Arab world, Central and Eastern Europe, and the Caribbean.

The Great Wall stands as a symbol of China’s resilience and historical defense against Mongol invasions. The remaining structure, built during the Ming Dynasty, stretches approximately 21,196 kilometres from the Hushan Mountains in Liaoning Province to the Bohai Gulf.

While most Fijians celebrated Fiji Day at home with flags and traditional lovo feasts, I spent my first Fiji Day away from home — at a UNESCO World Heritage site, with friends.
Each step along the Great Wall felt like a journey through ancient China, a testament to the unity and determination of its people. The climb was challenging, but the breathtaking views made it unforgettable.

Chaoyang International Light Festival

On October 11, seven journalists from the Asia-Pacific group joined others from Africa, Latin America, and Europe at the Chaoyang International Light Festival in Beijing.
The group enjoyed a boat ride along the Liangma River, featuring aerial performances including a blue whale (artificial) suspended with advanced tech and wires, and a floating Magic Cube.
The evening concluded with a live orchestra concert at the Shell Theater, performing the BBC Earth’s Blue Planet II audiovisual experience. The classical music was synchronised with stunning visuals of marine life, including dolphins and killer whales.
The festival showcased 60 groups of artwork, celebrating creativity and innovation.
