Late Kanti Punja remembered as unifying figure devoted to family and service

The late Kanti Lal Punja has been remembered as a unifying presence who placed family above all else.
During his funeral service at the Girmit Centre in Lautoka on Friday, his eldest son, Jagdish Punja, paid tribute to his father, describing him as a gentle figure whose greatest joy was his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He said family gatherings were central to his father’s life, creating space to share values and listen to one another.

Mr Jagdish Punja said his father was deeply spiritual and led by example in his daily practices.
“He shared his yoga routine, illustrating his way of imparting values and healthy habits to the family,” he said.
“He was deeply religious and maintained strong discipline through daily yoga, breathing exercises, walks, and swimming.
“He advocated for healthy eating, recommending soaked almonds, walnuts, fenugreek, and okra for well-being.
“His faith guided his actions, teaching the family to live with integrity, patience, prayer, and self-control.
“He served as a role model, demonstrating what it means to walk with God and uphold righteousness.”
Grandchildren described him as a patient and humble man who connected easily with people of all ages and made others feel valued through genuine care and attentiveness.
They expressed gratitude for his wisdom and humour, and pledged to carry forward his legacy of kindness and service.

Family friend Nitin Gandhi also paid tribute, highlighting Mr Punja’s lifelong commitment to humanitarian work and community development.
Mr Gandhi said he was known for organising food parcels and medical supplies, mentoring youth and supporting charitable and religious organisations.
“His leadership extended to founding and improving key institutions such as schools, hospitals, and crematoriums, earning him prestigious awards like the President’s Award and the Order of Fiji.
“At work, Kanti was known for his deep relationships with staff and customers, his wisdom in board meetings, and his unwavering commitment to helping others, even at personal inconvenience.”
Mr Gandhi called on those present to continue Mr Punja’s legacy of compassion, service and unity.
Mr Punja was later cremated at the Lovu Crematorium.
