Wainunu farmers gain easier market access with new market

Farmers in Wainunu, Bua, will no longer have to travel long distances to sell their produce following the opening of a new farmers market aimed at reducing transport costs and improving rural incomes.

The Wainunu Farmers Market was officially opened in the weekend by the Minister for Agriculture, Waterways and Sugar Industry, Tomasi Tunabuna.

For years, farmers from the district travelled to Labasa and Nabouwalu to sell their produce, often spending a significant share of their earnings on transport.

The new market provides a dedicated facility closer to home, giving farmers easier access to buyers and greater opportunities to increase their income.

Speaking at the opening, Mr Tunabuna said the project reflected what could be achieved through collaboration between Government and the community.

“This market is a true reflection of what can be achieved when communities and Government work together. It demonstrates your determination to create opportunities for yourselves and for future generations,” he said.

The Wainunu community contributed $40,112.65 towards construction of the market, while the Ministry of Agriculture, Waterways and Sugar Industry provided $76,437 through the Commercial Agricultural Development Programme (CADP) for construction materials and a further $17,350 to install a solar power system.

Mr Tunabuna said the investment would improve market access, strengthen agribusiness and support rural livelihoods.

“The opening of this market will provide farmers with a safe and convenient place to sell their produce, reducing travel time and transport costs while allowing them to earn more from their hard work,” he said.

He said the market would also create opportunities for women, young people, entrepreneurs and local vendors while encouraging increased agricultural production across the district.

Mr Tunabuna urged the community to take ownership of the facility to ensure its long-term success.

“This is only the beginning. The continued success of this market relies on all of us to keep it clean, well-managed and fully utilised for the benefit of present and future generations.”

He also encouraged farmers to work closely with Ministry extension officers to access technical advice and Government programmes that could help expand their farming businesses.

“Connect yourselves with the agricultural officers as they will guide you through your farming programmes.”

Organising committee member Akuila Nacoke thanked the Government for supporting the project.

“The new facility would greatly benefit local farmers by providing a convenient place to sell their produce, reducing transportation costs, and creating greater opportunities to improve household incomes and livelihoods,” he said.

Following the opening, farmers met with the Minister during a talanoa session to discuss challenges affecting agricultural production, market access and rural infrastructure.

Mr Tunabuna reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to working with farmers to address those issues and strengthen agricultural development in Wainunu and across Fiji.
