Villagers of Rokovuaka in Nalawa, Ra Province have marked a major step forward in a bid to protect their rural community from natural disasters. The opening of a new multipurpose evacuation centre on Monday gives them a new reason to feel safe and proud.
Minister for Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management, Sakiasi Ditoka, said the centre was more than just concrete and roofing iron structure.
This facility is a symbol of resilience and hope. It was built with your needs in mind. It belongs to you.

The $1.17million project was made possible through the support of the Korea International Cooperation Agency, with implementation led by the International Organization for Migration. Save the Children Fiji also trained the community on how to manage and maintain the centre.
"This is what happens when local leadership, national coordination and international partners come together with one goal, which is to protect and empower our communities,” Mr Ditoka said.
Built to withstand cyclones and floods, the centre will serve not only as an evacuation site, but also as a hub for everyday activities, such as training, small businesses, and especially women-led initiatives.
“It’s not just a shelter during disasters. It will also support income-generating activities for women and community events,” Mr Ditoka said.
In thanking all project partners he urged villagers to take pride and ownership of the new centre so that it will be a symbol of resilience, progress and your hope for a safer and stronger future. This facility is part of a national effort to build disaster resilience across Fiji’s vulnerable rural communities.
