The United States of America and China relations bestow profound implications for the broader Asia-Pacific region.
The Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) Commander, Major-General Ro Jone Kalouniwai highlighted this while speaking during the 11th Beijing Xiangshan Forum in China last week.
Alongside Major-General Kalouniwai, Minister for Home Affairs and Immigration Pio Tikoduadua also attended the forum.
“Fiji’s future together with other Pacific Island countries of the Oceania region is intrinsically intertwined with the relationships between the United States and China, the two wealthiest and most influential nations globally,” Major-General Kalouniwai said.
“The dynamic between these powerhouses holds profound implications for not only the South Pacific but also for the broader Asia Pacific region.
“A positive relationship between the U.S. and China bodes well for our future, offering prospects of peace and prosperity for a small country like Fiji in the South Pacific.
“However, our greatest fears become prominent when escalating tensions could lead to a bleak outlook, raising questions about long-term stability and the potential for conflict.”
Interdependence
Major-General Kalouniwai said interdependence of the U.S. and China’s economies is undeniable and has generally been managed effectively in day-to-day interactions.
He admits that RFMF notes that as China’s influence expands, underlying rivalries intensify, prompting reflections on the trajectory of their relationship and its implications for the future.
“Will they co-exist harmoniously or drift toward strategic competition, or even hostility?” Major-General Kalouniwai said.
“The answers to these critical questions remain uncertain, with both peace and conflict plausible outcomes dependent on decisions made in Washington and Beijing in the coming months and years.”
The RFMF chief said the urgency of America’s choices regarding China was paramount, as a significant rivalry could lead to catastrophic consequences and reshape global power dynamics.
Major-General Kalouniwai said America faced a critical juncture in responding to China’s rise, with decisions carrying significant regional and global security implications.

Zone of Peace
Major-General Kalouniwai acknowledges Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka’s advocacy of the Zone of Peace concept for the South Pacific region. He said such concept aligned closely with the overarching theme of promoting peace and stability amid geopolitical challenges.
“The Zone of Peace embodies principles of non-aggression, non-interference, and the peaceful resolution of disputes, offering a framework for fostering trust, cooperation, and security among nations in the South Pacific,” Major-General Kalouniwai said.
“By upholding these guiding principles, countries can create a conducive environment for dialogue, collaboration, and mutual respect; laying the groundwork for enduring peace and prosperity in the region.”
