The Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) has confirmed it is aware of concerns raised by residents over a damaged culvert along Raravou Road near Korotari School in Labasa.

In a statement, FRA said its maintenance team was expected to be on site today to carry out culvert scour works, which would allow bus services to resume.

The authority said recent unfavourable weather conditions had prevented the immediate replacement of the culvert.

However, works for the installation of a new cross culvert have been scheduled for later this week, weather permitting.

FRA assured the community it remained committed to restoring safe and reliable road access and would continue to monitor the situation closely.

Residents of Korotari welcomed the announcement but highlighted the disruption caused by the damaged culvert.

Pradeep Lal said bus services had been suspended for the past four weeks, forcing residents to walk more than 500 metres from the main road to their homes, often while carrying groceries and other essentials.

Another resident, Om Prakash, said the situation had been especially challenging for elderly residents and families, with the new school term approaching.

β€œDuring rainy days, it becomes very hard for people to walk while carrying groceries. The road becomes slippery and unsafe,” he said.

Residents said the damaged culvert had disrupted transport and raised serious safety concerns, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall.

They hope the repairs will allow bus services to resume and ease daily travel difficulties.
